Thomas Pennant
An ardent naturalist since childhood, he published books on british and arctic zoology.Connection: Thomas Pennant (1726-98) was born at Downing near Holywell, Flintshire.
He also travelled extensively, his best known writings being accounts of his journeys through Scotland (1771-75) and Wales (1778-81).
There is a flourishing Cymdeithas Thomas Pennant (Thomas Pennant Society) based in Whitford. We have restored the tomb of Moses Griffith, Pennant's artist and placed a memorial to Pennant near the entrance to the village school.
His grave is somewhere in the East end of the church but it's exact location was lost during 19th century alterations.
