Won King George V Gold Cup six times with six different horses, a record yet to be equalled. One of his three sons, Matthew won team gold in both junior and young rider European championships. Nieces Marie Edgar (daughter of Liz) and Sophie (daughter of Freddie) have been European championship medallists at junior and young rider and pony level respectively.
Represented Britain at five Olympic Games (1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1988) winning individual bronze medals in 1960 (Sunsalve) and 1968 (Mister Softee). Voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1960. Individual world champion in 1970 with Beethoven. Individual European champion in 1961 (Sunsalve), 1967 and 1969 (Mister Softee). Won team gold (Philco) in world championships in 1978. Last major team championship was 1991 European winning team silver (Lannegan).
Born cardiff in 1940. Family moved to Crick, near Chepstow when he was nine and he has lived there ever since.
